Palmer Names Tone

The founder who gave the principle its first and lasting name

D.D. Palmer founded chiropractic on one word and printed it on the title page: Founded on Tone. In his 1910 book The Chiropractor's Adjuster he defined tone as the normal degree of nerve tension and made any variation of it the cause of disease. He classed tone with blood pressure as a measurable tension. The book, published before the neuroscience existed to test its claim, is the founding document of the Unified Model of Tone.

D.D. Palmer named the founding principle of chiropractic tone, and he did it in the most deliberate way available to him. The title page of The Chiropractor's Adjuster, published by the Portland Printing House Company in 1910, carries a printed motto directly beneath his authorship line: Founded on Tone.

He did not bury it. The definition appears on page 7, the dedication page, before the first chapter begins. Palmer's own index lists nineteen separate pages under the entry for Tone, along with entries for tonicity, renitence, nerve tone, muscle tone and physiological tone. Across roughly a thousand pages he kept returning to a word of four letters.

The definition

Tone is the normal degree of nerve tension

Palmer's definition is mechanical, specific, and unusually precise for 1910. Tone is the normal degree of nerve tension, expressed in function as the normal elasticity, activity, strength and excitability of the organs as observed in a state of health. Disease, in his frame, is not a thing that arrives from outside. It is any variation of that tension (Palmer 1910).

Notice what that does. It makes health a measurable state of a system rather than the absence of an enemy, and it puts the variable in the nervous system. That is a remarkably modern claim to find on a dedication page written before the First World War.

Life is the expression of tone. In that sentence is the basic principle of Chiropractic. Tone is the normal degree of nerve tension.

Scope

Tone was never only about the spine

Palmer defined tone as a general principle of living things, not a spinal one. In the chapter headed Tone at page 659 he works through biology, botany, music and acoustics in turn. A plant is in tone when light, heat and moisture are balanced. A stringed instrument is in tone when its vibrations reach the ear in harmony. He then makes the general claim without hedging it: all life, vegetable or animal, depends on tone for its normal or abnormal existence (Palmer 1910).

This matters for anyone who wants to use the word carefully today. Palmer was not describing what a modern clinician means by muscle tone. He was naming a property he believed ran through every living system, and treating the human nervous system as one instance of it.

Renitence

The springback of living tissue

Palmer built tone out of two properties, elasticity and renitency, and renitency is his word for the inherent ability of living tissue to resist pressure and return to its normal size, shape and position. At page 971 he defines tone as the elasticity and renitency of tissue which responds to compression, and extends the same property to nerve tone, muscle tone and arterial tone (Palmer 1910).

Read that as a systems claim and it holds up. He is describing a tissue that is not passive under load, that pushes back, and whose quality of pushing back is the thing worth measuring. Sherrington would demonstrate the neurological machinery for exactly that four years earlier, in an Oxford laboratory Palmer had no access to (Sherrington 1906).

This innate quality of springing back, recovering its normal size, shape and position is known as tone.

The measurement claim

He said tone could be measured, and named blood pressure

Palmer claimed tone as a measurable quantity, and he named the instrument. At page 791 he writes that tone is measured by a tonometer, an instrument for measuring tension or the degree of resistance to pressure. His two examples are the tension of the eyeball and blood pressure (Palmer 1910). Then he closes the door on any mystical reading: it is not weighed on a scale, nor measured by the gallon.

The example he reached for is the one that lasts. Blood pressure became the century's exemplary regulated variable, the number every clinic reads as a matter of course. Palmer placed tone in that class in 1910: a physical tension an instrument can read. No instrument of his era could read it across a nervous system. The claim sat ahead of its tools, and the tools have been arriving ever since.

It is not weighed on a scale, nor measured by the gallon.

A frequency for tone

The founding text prints muscle tone at 18 to 20 vibrations per second

The founding text of chiropractic contains a measured frequency for tone. At page 474 Palmer reprints the physiologist Brubaker at length. The passage he chose attributes muscle tone to a vibration, an intermittent rhythmic variation in tension set by the rate of stimulation. It gives the number: a vibration frequency of from 18 to 20 per second. It even reports that a muscle tetanized with induced currents rises in pitch as the stimulation rate climbs.

Palmer's own instinct ran the same way. At page 58 he writes that nerves and wires vibrate according to their tenseness (Palmer 1910). The string picture this library keeps returning to is Palmer's own, and he backed it with a laboratory figure. A tone that vibrates at a rate is a tone that can drift, and a tone that drifts is a tone that can be tuned.

Both directions

Too much, or too little

Palmer insisted that disease is the result of too much or not enough function, and he was emphatic that it runs in both directions. At page 19 he writes that the amount of nerve tension determines health or disease, that in health there is normal tension known as tone, and that the kind of disease depends on which nerves are too tense or too slack.

He held this position against his own school. At page 505 he corrects the Palmer School's published claim that disease is caused by a lack of impulse, on the plain logical ground that if that were true, function would always be below normal in every ailment, which it obviously is not (Palmer 1910). That is the argument of someone reasoning from the evidence rather than defending a slogan.

A correction worth making

He argued against the pinched pipe

The most widely repeated picture of chiropractic, the nerve squeezed shut like a kinked hose, is a model D.D. Palmer explicitly rejected in print. At page 161 he writes that an impingement, a pressure against a nerve, is never a mechanical obstruction, that an impingement does not obstruct, and that it irritates in a large share of diseases and excites functional activity beyond a normal degree.

Ask what follows from that. If the mechanism is irritation rather than blockage, then the adjustment is not clearing a pipe. It is changing the state of a system that is being driven wrong, in either direction. The founder's own words point at regulation, not plumbing.

An impingement does not obstruct. It irritates in a large share of diseases, and excites functional activity beyond a normal degree.

1910 before 1926

He described tonic drive sixteen years before homeostasis had a name

Palmer described continuous regulatory drive before physiology had a word for it. At page 352 he defines nerve and muscle tone as a continuous slight contraction that varies from time to time. The condition depends on nerve centers that never stop sending impulses into the muscles. Then he names the output: this normal tension plays an important part in controlling and furnishing the heat of the body.

Read the parts of that account. A center that never stops transmitting. A periphery whose tension is the running record of the transmission. A regulated variable, body heat, held by the traffic between them. Walter Cannon coined homeostasis in 1926, thirteen years after Palmer died. The passage on page 352 was describing the phenomenon in 1910.

Innate

The intelligence behind the mind

Palmer's other central term is Innate, and he defines it at page 362 with more care than he is usually credited for. Innate is not the mind, he writes. It is the intelligence back of and controller of the mind as well as of every thought, and there is an inborn intelligence in every living being and in every plant that grows (Palmer 1910).

Whatever a reader makes of the metaphysics, the functional claim is clear enough. Something in a living organism organizes it toward its own maintenance without being told to. Hippocrates called that physis. Cannon would later call the measurable version of it homeostasis. Palmer called it Innate, and said tone was how it expressed itself in tissue.

September 1895

The founding account, told honestly

The origin story of chiropractic is Harvey Lillard, a janitor in the Ryan Block where Palmer kept his office. Palmer's account says Lillard had been deaf for seventeen years, that he had felt something give way in his back while exerting himself in a cramped, stooping position, and that an examination showed a vertebra racked from its normal position. Palmer reasoned that if the vertebra were replaced, the hearing should return.

The record around that account is not tidy, and the honest version says so. Palmer's writing gives September 1895, and The Chiropractor of 1904 names 18 September 1895. Lillard's own signed testimonial, printed in The Chiropractor in January 1897, says he did not learn of Palmer's science until January 1896 and received two treatments in the spring of that year (Lillard 1897). Lillard's daughter later told a different version again. Treat it as the founding account as Palmer told it, and let the discrepancies stand in the open.

The claim

He knew what he had

Palmer claimed tone as his originating idea in the first person, repeatedly. At page 632 he writes that tone is the foundation upon which he built the science, reasoned out its philosophy and created the art of adjusting luxated vertebrae (Palmer 1910). At page 879 he calls tone the element, the source of all life, and says that upon the comprehension of tone he built the grandest science of this or any age (Palmer 1910).

He also claimed the bidirectional disease principle outright, writing that he was the originator, the Fountain Head of the essential principle that disease is the result of too much or not enough functionating. Palmer was not a modest man. He was, on this specific point, correct about what he had found.

Why it is worth reclaiming

The word was always the better one

Chiropractic historian Joseph Keating traced Palmer's own conceptual drift across his career, from vital magnetism through machine metaphors to nerve impingement and resulting changes in tone, and described tone as the bridge between Palmer's concept of an organizing force and his concept of the subluxation (Keating 1992). The word sat at the hinge of his thinking, and it is the one that survives contact with modern neuroscience.

That is the case for going back to it. Tone is measurable, it runs in both directions, it belongs to a system rather than a bone, and it was on the title page from the beginning. Everything this practice does is built on the same word Palmer printed there in 1910.

Palmer and the model

Founded on Tone is the ancestor of the Unified Model of Tone

The Unified Model of Tone descends from the motto on this page in a straight line. The model claims that muscle tone, vascular tone, autonomic tone, cortical tone and emotional tone are one variable read at different sites. It holds that health is regulated tone and disease is dysregulated tone. Palmer wrote the first draft of that equation on his dedication page in 1910. Life is the expression of tone, and the cause of disease is any variation of it.

The model reads the founder's record exactly as it stands. He named tone as his central principle: the standard from which every variation of structure and function is measured, and the standard of health from which any deviation is disease. He built an entire system of care on the claim that the body's regulation is set by it.

He had the recognition right and the mechanism unavailable to him. Sherrington was only then building the physiology of integration, and Cannon's homeostasis was sixteen years away. And he bound the principle to one tissue and one profession, which is the ordinary fate of a large idea found early. A claim that a single system underlies the function of the whole body, made in 1895 with no neuroscience behind it, was bound to sound like overreach. Palmer could not have seen that the principle he was describing was the shared foundation of every healing profession. It expressed itself through the spine in his hands and through entirely different access points in everyone else's. He mistook the part he could reach for the whole, and the profession spent the next century being punished for the size of the idea rather than credited for finding it early.

The model's answer credits the finding and declines the ownership. A principle that turns out to govern the whole body was never going to belong to whichever profession noticed it first. What chiropractic contributed was a specification: the nervous system as the regulatory center, the spine as its structural access, and a complete system of care built on that identification. The unbinding is the model's own step; the naming, the bidirectional criterion and the measurement claim are the founder's. A century after he printed Founded on Tone, the model unbinds his principle from the one tissue and the one profession he bound it to, and returns tone to the whole body.

What did D.D. Palmer mean by tone?

Is Palmer's tone the same as muscle tone?

Not quite, and it is worth being precise. Palmer used tone far more broadly than a clinician does today, extending it to plants, arteries, gases and musical instruments as a general property of living and vibrating things. The modern neurophysiological account of muscle tone, as a state actively maintained by continuous reflex activity, was established separately by Charles Sherrington. The two ideas converge, but they were arrived at independently.
