Our curated library
of nervous system research.

Every page in this library is about one system and the state it holds. Each takes a condition, a measurement, or a question, teaches the biology from the ground up, and reads it through tone, the body's central regulatory state. Every reference links to its primary publication so you can read the source yourself.

Tone

The regulated variable underneath your symptoms, and the idea the rest of this library is built on.

Medicine sorts illness by organ and by specialty. The heart goes to cardiology, the gut to gastroenterology, the mood to psychiatry. That division is useful for training doctors. It is a poor description of a body.

One system reaches all of it. The nervous system sets the tension in your arteries, the pace of your gut, the depth of your sleep, the load on your immune system, and the sensitivity of your pain. It does not observe the boundaries between specialties, because it built none of them.

That system holds a state, and the state has a name. We call it tone: the integrated organization the nervous system maintains across the whole body, and its ability to move where the moment demands and return to balance afterward. Health is the width of that range. A great deal of illness is the collapse of it.

Many conditions, read as many views of one regulated system.

The library begins with the dimensions of tone: a small set of properties that describe how any nervous system is behaving. Every condition that follows is a combination of two or three of them. That is what lets one model carry a page on blood pressure and a page on tinnitus without either becoming vague.

The IndexCitations

The dimensions of tone

Nine properties that describe how any nervous system is behaving. Every condition below is two or three of these in combination.

How the system is read

The anatomy and the instruments the rest of the library depends on, each taught from the ground up.

The questions medicine leaves open

For the reader who has been told the tests are normal, or that the cause is unknown.

Where regulation shows in the numbers

Conditions whose readings are a direct measure of the nervous system's control.

Where the system loses its range

What takes hold when a system stops returning to balance and settles into a narrower set of states.

Where the body answers the nervous system

Immune, hormonal, airway, and digestive function, read as outputs of the same regulation.

Where an input meets the body

Force, injury, and load, and why the same input lands differently in different people.

Where the system is still forming

Development, pregnancy, and childhood, when the regulating system is being built rather than maintained.

Where the whole system shows up at once

Conditions that cut across every part of the body at the same time.

Why a chiropractic practice built this

We are chiropractors, and our subject is the nervous system. This library is the thinking behind how we practice. The body holds a regulated state. That state can be read and measured. Care worth giving is care that helps the system find its range again.

This library makes no claims about treatment, and none of it is medical advice. It is here because these are the ideas we actually work from, and because a patient deserves to see the reasoning rather than be asked to take it on faith. If you want to know how we think, read any page in the index. If you want to know what we do with it, that is on Our Approach.

Questions people ask

Why is a library about conditions organized around the nervous system?

Because one system participates in all of them. The nervous system sets vascular tension, gut motility, immune signaling, sleep, and pain sensitivity, so its regulated state is a common thread running through conditions that medicine files under different specialties. Reading them together is the point of the library.

What is tone?

Tone is the integrated organization of the body's interacting state, the way its mechanical, electrical, chemical, fluid, and neural processes are related at a given moment. Health is the capacity to move that organization freely and return. A great deal of illness is its collapse into a narrower, costlier set of states.

What are the dimensions of tone?

Nine properties that describe how a nervous system is behaving. They are the value it defends, how loudly it responds, its rhythm, and whether its systems stay in step. Then how it predicts, what holding a state costs, where it has room to move, how good its information is, and how long the pattern has been running. Any condition is a combination of a few of them.

What kind of sources are cited here?

Primarily peer-reviewed studies indexed on PubMed and PubMed Central, alongside journal articles, systematic reviews, and scientific statements. Every citation links to its primary publication so you can read the original yourself, and mixed or negative findings are reported alongside positive ones.

Does this library say chiropractic treats these conditions?

No. These pages are educational discussions of the nervous system and its role in each subject. They are not treatment claims, diagnostic tools, or a substitute for medical care. If you have or suspect any condition discussed here, see your physician.

Chiropractic care is legally defined as the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of neuromusculoskeletal conditions. This library is an educational discussion of the nervous system and its role in health. It is not a diagnostic tool, a treatment plan, or a substitute for medical care. If you have or suspect any condition discussed here, consult your primary care physician. Do not start, stop, or change any treatment based on these pages.
