The First Disciples

The graduates who carried one idea into many vocabularies

The first disciples of D.D. Palmer were the small cohort who graduated at Davenport between 1898 and 1905, thirteen of them by 1901 and fifty six by 1905. Within a decade they had founded rival schools, written the first textbook in 1906 and won the first courtroom victory in 1907. Their theories contradicted one another and the variable they all read did not change. The Unified Model of Tone reads that convergence as evidence of one underlying regulatory system.

THE COHORT

A small first cohort carried chiropractic out of one room

The first disciples were the students who graduated under D.D. Palmer at Davenport between 1898 and 1905, and there were far fewer of them than legend suggests. The earliest surviving roll, compiled by C. Sterling Cooley and printed in The Record of Carver Chiropractic College in 1950, names thirteen graduates through 1901 (Keating 1998). B.J. Palmer’s own list, published in Fountain Head News on 22 November 1919, names fifty six people who took the Davenport course between 1895 and 1905. Fifty six. That is the entire pool from which a profession grew. Within five years of the last name on that list, those graduates had founded rival schools in Cedar Rapids, Chicago and Oklahoma City, written the first textbook, published the first journal, and won the first courtroom victory that gave chiropractic a legal identity of its own.

Ask what that commits you to. If a profession of many thousands descends from a roster you can read aloud in two minutes, then the thing being transmitted was not a technique library. It was a single claim about the nervous system, portable enough to survive being taught by people who disagreed with each other about almost everything else. That is what makes this page different from a founder story. The founder is interesting. The dispersal is decisive. An idea that only one man can teach is a personality. An idea that spreads through rivals, defectors and courtrooms while its author is still alive and still objecting is something else. The first disciples are the moment chiropractic stopped being one man’s practice and became a claim in public circulation.

THE COUNT

The number was never twenty three

No primary source supports the frequently repeated claim that Palmer trained twenty three disciples. The figure has no traceable origin in the Davenport record, and the two contemporary lists that do survive contradict it in both directions. Cooley’s roll of the earliest graduates, given in order of graduation, runs: Andrew P. Davis and William A. Seeley in 1898; Oakley G. Smith, Helen De Lendrecie, Mrs. J.C. Bowman, M.P. Brown and Earnest Simon in 1899; O.B. Jones in 1900; then T.H. Story, Solon M. Langworthy, Allen Raymond, E.E. Sutton and H.R. Stouder in 1901. Thirteen names across four years. Davis and Seeley arrived already credentialled, Davis as a physician and osteopath, Seeley as a physician, which tells you what kind of person went looking for this in 1898.

The two rolls do not agree, and the disagreement is worth stating plainly rather than smoothing over. Cooley puts Davis and Seeley first. B.J. Palmer’s 1919 list, written in the middle of a public quarrel with Willard Carver, opens with H.D. Reynard, Ira H. Lucas, O.G. Smith and Minora C. Paxson, and places A.P. Davis thirty fourth. Both documents were produced long after the events they describe, by parties with something at stake in the ordering (Keating and Foderaro 1999). The first cohort was small, that its membership is only partly recoverable, and that anyone quoting a precise apostolic number is quoting a legend rather than a ledger. Precision that arrives after the fact is usually doing work for someone.

THE ROOM

The most vivid surviving record of the first disciples at work is a clinical demonstration printed in The Chiropractor in 1904. On the afternoon of 1 July 1903, in suite 15 of the Aiken block in Santa Barbara, California, D.D. Palmer held a clinic (Keating 1995). The account names the students present: H.D. Reynard, Ira H. Lucas, O.G. Smith, Minora C. Paxson, A.B. Wightman and M.A. Collier. Eight witnesses in all. The patient’s left hand, arm, shoulder and adjoining spine were intensely hot while the rest of him measured normal. Palmer adjusted the dorsal region. The heat on the left resolved. He had carried the segment too far, and the same heat appeared immediately on the right. He asked the class one question and walked out.

The question was whether the body is heated by blood or by nerves. He returned two or three minutes later and asked it again. The class answered nerves. That is the whole scene, and it is a teaching method as much as a discovery. Notice its shape. A change is produced, the change is reversed by overshoot, and the students are made to draw the inference themselves rather than receive it. The source is not neutral, and this page should say so. The account was published by the school with everything to gain from fixing priority in Palmer’s name, and within a few lines it calls the patient Roy Renwick and then A.R. Renwick. A document careless about a patient’s initials was not careless about who got the credit.

Chiropractic is distinctly a science differing from all other modes of healing; the less it is mixed with therapeutical remedies the better.

THE FIRST BREAK

Solon Langworthy opened a rival school before the ink was dry

Solon Massey Langworthy graduated under Palmer in 1901 and opened his own school in September of the same year (Gibbons 1981). The Cedar Rapids Chiropractic Cure and School, later renamed the American School of Chiropractic and Nature Cure, was the first serious rival to Davenport. In October 1903 Langworthy began publishing The Backbone, the first regular chiropractic journal. By 1904 he was teaching that the intervertebral foramina, which he called the oval windows, had to be held open so that brain force could reach the end organs, and he had built a traction table to do it. He argued that the enfeeblement of old age followed from degenerating discs narrowing those windows. That is a mechanical theory of aging, offered in 1904, by a man three years out of school.

Ask what Langworthy actually did to the idea. He narrowed it. Palmer’s early practice had been to adjust any displaced part that produced friction, including arteries, veins, muscles and ligaments. Langworthy reduced the field of interest to the spinal joint and the nerve passing through it. Historians credit him with that reduction, and every practitioner who has ever used the word spine as though it named the whole subject is working downstream of a graduate of one year’s standing. He also helped push the first chiropractic licensing act through in Minnesota, working with Daniel Reisland of Duluth (Gibbons 1993). The Palmers traveled to urge the governor to veto it, because the statute would have licensed Cedar Rapids graduates alongside their own.

THE TEXTBOOK

The first chiropractic textbook was written by the breakaways

Modernized Chiropractic appeared in 1906 in two volumes, written by Oakley G. Smith, Minora C. Paxson and Solon M. Langworthy. It was the first textbook the field possessed, and it arrived four years before D.D. Palmer published The Chiropractor’s Adjuster in 1910 (Palmer 1910). Paxson chaired obstetrics and gynaecology at the American School. Smith was its dean. Langworthy ran it. All three were Palmer graduates, and none of them was welcome in Davenport. The parent school produced the profession’s first serious literature by losing control of its own students, which is a strange way to found a discipline and a very common one.

That ordering matters more than it first appears. If the founding text of a field is written by people the founder has disowned, then the field was never the founder’s private property. It was a public claim, testable and arguable, from the start. Palmer understood this and hated it. From 1904 onward he attacked mixing in print, naming Langworthy, A.P. Davis and later Willard Carver. Yet most of the graduates he attacked were teaching an earlier version of his own thinking, faithfully, while he himself moved on to a new one. The charge of deviation assumes a fixed original. The record does not supply one.

THE FORK

Oakley Smith took the same observation and left the profession

Oakley G. Smith graduated under Palmer in 1899, became dean at Cedar Rapids, co-wrote the first textbook, and then left chiropractic altogether. He proposed that the interference was not bone against nerve but contracted connective tissue, a lesion he named the ligatite. From that single change of substrate he built naprapathy, a separate profession with its own schools and its own registry, which still exists more than a century later (Beideman 1994). Smith and Palmer agreed on one point at least. They agreed the two systems had little in common. Smith had stood in the Santa Barbara clinic in 1903 and watched heat move from one arm to the other. He did not doubt what he saw. He doubted the account of where it came from.

Look carefully at what changed and what did not. Smith kept the whole architecture: a local mechanical fault, altered tension in tissue, a downstream loss of regulation, correction by hand. He moved the fault from joint to ligament. The variable survived the relocation intact. This is the pattern the rest of this page keeps finding, and it is why a history of tone has to include the people who walked away. Every serious break in that first decade preserved the idea of tissue tension as the thing being read and changed, and argued only about which tissue holds the reading. Disagreement about the substrate is not disagreement about the variable.

ANATOMY

John Howard answered the criticism by buying cadavers

John F.A. Howard enrolled at the Palmer School in 1905 and founded the National School of Chiropractic in 1906, in the same Ryan Building in Davenport where Palmer had delivered the first adjustment eleven years earlier. He had D.D. Palmer’s blessing, which almost no other breakaway received. In 1908 he moved the school to Chicago, where patients, students and bodies were all more plentiful, and National became the first chiropractic institution to run a human dissection laboratory (Beideman 1996). The school he founded is now National University of Health Sciences. Two years from enrollment to founding a college is fast. It tells you how thin the wall between student and teacher still was in 1906.

This is the second kind of break, and it is not doctrinal. Howard did not dispute the claim about the nervous system. He disputed the sufficiency of the evidence and relocated to a city where he could obtain more of it. Ask what that commits you to. If a field’s central claim concerns tissue under tension, then the field owes itself the tissue. It owes itself the dissection room, the microscope, the measurement. Howard’s answer set the pattern for everything that followed in chiropractic education, from anatomy laboratories to imaging to the outcome measures used in clinics today. Rigor was not imposed on this field from outside. It was demanded from within, in year eleven, by a student.

THE LAWYER

Willard Carver built a structural chiropractic and named himself its constructor

Willard Carver was an Iowa attorney educated at Drake University who had performed legal work for D.D. Palmer years before he ever studied chiropractic. In August 1906 he and L.L. Denny incorporated the Carver-Denny Kiropractic College at Oklahoma City, and it opened that October (Jackson 1994). Carver called himself the Constructor of Chiropractic. He taught an eighteen month curriculum and a structural analysis that read the whole body as a weight bearing column, tracing distortion upward from the feet and pelvis rather than outward from a single segment. Cora H. Cain graduated in his first class in 1907. T.F. Ratledge graduated on 23 December 1907, practiced at Guthrie, and had opened a school of his own by 1908.

One correction belongs here, because the error is repeated constantly. Carver was not a direct Palmer graduate. He and Denny trained at the Parker School of Chiropractic in Ottumwa, Iowa, run by Charles Ray Parker, who does appear on B.J. Palmer’s Davenport list. Carver is a second generation figure. The distinction matters because it measures how fast the transmission had already branched. By 1906 the idea was being handed on by people who had never sat in a room with the man who named it, and it was arriving intact enough to build a college around. That is the practical test of whether an idea is portable, and it had been passed within eleven years.

THE COURTROOM

The rivals wrote the book that saved the parent school

In 1907 Shegataro Morikubo, a Palmer School graduate practicing in La Crosse, Wisconsin, was arrested on 22 July and charged with practicing medicine, surgery and osteopathy without a license (Rehm 1986). His attorney was Tom Morris. The case went to a jury on 31 August 1907. Morris did not argue that chiropractic worked, which would have put the burden on the wrong question. He argued that chiropractic was separate and distinct from osteopathy in philosophy and in practice, and therefore could not be prosecuted under an osteopathy statute. To demonstrate distinctness he needed a published body of doctrine. The only one in existence was Modernized Chiropractic, written the previous year by Palmer’s estranged graduates in Cedar Rapids.

Morikubo was acquitted. Morris became chief counsel to the Universal Chiropractors’ Association and later lieutenant governor of Wisconsin, and the separate and distinct reasoning was reused across the country for years. Follow the chain once more, because it is the whole argument of this page in one sequence. Palmer disowns his students. His students write the book. The book is entered as evidence to defend one of his loyalists. The profession’s legal existence was secured by the very dispersal the founder spent his last decade denouncing. Schism did not weaken the idea. Schism is what gave it a literature, and the literature is what gave it standing in law.

Nerves are never pinched or impinged upon in the foramina. Foramina are never narrowed. … The vertebra itself, so far as a chiropractor knows, is never displaced, dislocated or subluxated.

THE FOUNDER MOVED

Palmer kept revising the theory his graduates had already carried away

The graduates are usually blamed for deviating. The record shows the founder deviating faster. Joseph Keating’s comparison of D.D. Palmer’s publications across four periods tracks the vocabulary changing decade by decade (Keating 1992). From 1897 to 1902 Palmer wrote about circulatory obstruction, therapeusis and manipulation, with vital force standing where tone would later sit. From 1903 the word manipulation gives way to adjustment and circulatory obstruction is dropped. Tone itself does not enter the vocabulary until the 1908 to 1910 material, arriving alongside nerve vibration. The terms innate and educated, used in 1904 as plain adjectives for two divisions of the nervous system, had by 1910 become Innate Intelligence, a personality and a segment of the universal. The theory was still moving fifteen years after the first adjustment.

Robert Gibbons counted at least ten institutions across four states offering a chiropractic course with D.D. Palmer’s involvement during the last sixteen years of his life (Gibbons 1998). He taught at Davenport, then at Pasadena and Santa Barbara, then in Oklahoma. A man who relocates that often and revises that hard is not a fixed point from which others drifted. He is one moving position among several. Many of the students he attacked for error were teaching the Palmer of 1901 with precision, and it was Palmer who had left. The most instructive detail is the last one. By 1914 he was denying the pinched nerve outright (Palmer 1914), while the metaphor he rejected, the foot on the hose, was already spreading through the profession under other names.

THE DISPERSAL AND THE MODEL

What the first disciples give the Unified Model of Tone

The first disciples supply the clearest historical case of convergence this section holds. Each of them took the same observation and moved it to a different tissue. Langworthy moved the fault to the disc and the foramen. Smith moved it to the ligament, then left to found naprapathy. Howard moved the school to a dissection laboratory in Chicago. Carver moved the analysis to the whole weight bearing column. Palmer himself moved from blood to nerve to vibration to spirit. His most quoted sentence on the subject, widely reproduced from page 7 of the 1910 Adjuster, holds that life is the expression of tone (Palmer 1910). The theories were incompatible. The class of change they each reported was not.

The Unified Model of Tone draws an inference from that pattern and states it as an inference. When methods built on incompatible theories produce the same arc of recovery, the most parsimonious explanation is that they act on one underlying system. Naming that system is the entire task. The model names it as the nervous system read as tone, the living state of tissue tension at every scale from cell to posture. Six schools across six cities in one decade is a small sample, and it is the kind of sample that matters, because the doctrines were genuinely at war and the operating commitment underneath them held.

Ask the useful question rather than the tribal one. What must be true of the nervous system for so many different hands, using so many different theories, to keep reporting the same class of change? Repeated independent discovery is the strongest evidence available that there is something there to discover. Every healing tradition has independently discovered pieces of this principle, and the discovery is far older than any modern profession. The model makes no claim of priority and depends on none. Read the thirteen graduates of 1901 as one such independent line among many rather than as the origin of the idea. What that line contributed was a specification: the nervous system as the regulatory center, the spine as its structural access, and a complete system of care built on that identification.

The measurement is theirs and the extension is the model's. None of these people used the word tone the way this site uses it, and none of them would have signed the synthesis. The model does not enlist them. It makes one claim they never had the instruments to test. A set of separately measured signals are readings of a single variable: cortical excitability, autonomic regulation, map organization and tissue compliance. When those signals are recorded in the same people and load on one common factor, the unification claim is established. An idea that survives being contradicted by the people carrying it has stopped behaving like a doctrine and started behaving like a variable.

Questions people ask
