Donald M. Epstein, born in Brooklyn in 1953, built Network and teaches it from Boulder, Colorado. Between 1979 and 1984 he pooled nine existing methods into a single analysis and published it as Network Analysis in 1983. He holds that a displaced vertebra is often a compensation for tension held in the membranes around the spinal cord. Network Spinal Analysis followed in 1994, NetworkSpinal in 2017. The Unified Model of Tone carries his root and compensation rule forward as its own.

01 / TRAINING AND THE FIRST ANOMALY

Donald Epstein rebuilt his analysis when his own instruments contradicted each other

Epstein began practice in 1977 as an upper cervical specific chiropractor, reading atlas temperature on a neurocalograph and pelvic balance on a leg check. A thermal pattern would appear with no cervical involvement on the leg check. The leg check would show cervical involvement with no thermal pattern. When the atlas temperature was off by more than one and a half degrees Fahrenheit, the leg check often stayed quiet. A contact at the sacrum then cleared the atlas reading, the pattern and the legs together. The contact point was nowhere near the atlas. Epstein spent the next five years building an analysis that could hold both findings at once.

Brooklyn College, then New York Chiropractic College in 1977

Donald M. Epstein was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1953, and took his undergraduate work at Brooklyn College. He earned the Doctor of Chiropractic degree from New York Chiropractic College in 1977 and left with a clinical excellence award. His training was orthodox for the specific tradition he entered. He took open mouth, lateral cervical and base posterior spinographs. Wedge lines compared the plane of the atlas to a corrected occipital line. Torque was read as deviation from the four to eight degrees at which the atlas rested. A neurocalograph on a strip recorder established a pattern, and he gave no adjustment unless that pattern returned at the same intensity as the previous visit.

Two practices, Brooklyn to Bellmore, and the readings that would not agree

Epstein practiced in New York for roughly fifteen years, and his own published papers date the addresses. The 1983 Network Analysis articles carry 3607 Quentin Road, Brooklyn. The 1986 paper on the spinal meningeal functional unit carries 2431 Merrick Road, Bellmore, on Long Island. In that period he was working from the premise he had been taught, that all interference occurred at the upper cervical spine at the level of the foramen magnum. He treated thoracic and lumbar segments as compensatory and avoided adjusting them, on the reasoning that structural work would bring the pattern reading back. His own instruments kept refusing that premise.

02 / NETWORK ANALYSIS, 1983

Network Chiropractic pooled nine existing methods into one analysis between 1979 and 1984

Epstein dates the compilation himself. In Clinical Origin of Network he writes that the subluxation classification and the inclusion of the various methods grew from 1979 through 1984, and that the phasing system took the three years after that. He did not adopt any of the nine methods whole. He took their analyses apart, kept the readings that survived his own cross checks, and rebuilt them into a single procedure that runs on every visit. This practice inherits that act of pooling.

The nine methods on Epstein's roster

The nine are named in his own account. Upper cervical specific work, carried on the site as HIO knee chest, was where he started and the first method his own findings contradicted. Logan Basic supplied the four-ounce sacral apex contact. Pierce-Stillwagon gave him the atlas temperature differential and the pelvic work. Thompson contributed the positive ilium and the drop table. Sacro-Occipital Technique supplied the sacrum and occiput relationship, and Epstein credits Bertrand DeJarnette by name for it. From Toftness came the sustained light contact and the microwave reading. Directional Non-Force Technique brought the reactive leg check of Richard Van Rumpt. Applied Kinesiology supplied George Goodheart's vertebral challenge, and Lowell Ward's Stressology completed the roster. He read further into Gonstead spinal analysis without taking it up.

Network Analysis reached print in 1983 and asked six questions

The method appeared in the Digest of Chiropractic Economics in two parts in 1983, Part I in the March and April issue and Part 2 in the July and August issue. Part I sets out the questions the analysis answers. Is a vertebral subluxation present. Where is it. What direction of misalignment comprises it. What direction of force will help the body correct it. What is the sequence of adjustments. What type of force is needed. Epstein notes that most practitioners of his day considered three of the first four. The fifth and sixth questions, sequence and force type, are the ones he added, and the phasing system is his answer to the fifth.

I have chosen to investigate the similarities, and weave these common fibers into what I now present to you, my fellow chiropractors, as Network Analysis.

03 / ROOT AND COMPENSATION

Epstein's strongest claim is that the displaced vertebra is often the compensation

Epstein split the vertebral subluxation into two classes in 1983 and put the origin of one of them outside the spine entirely. In a Class B subluxation, he wrote, the site of origin is within the neurological system rather than the structural system. An emotional or chemical overload of the brain and spinal cord circuitry places abnormal tension on the cord, and the vertebra displaces afterward as an adaptive feature. The bone that a practitioner can see and feel is, in that account, the second event.

Class A and Class B, defined in 1983

Epstein's two classes are separable under the hands and under the instruments. A Class A subluxation is structural. A physical concussion of forces misaligns a segment and fixes it, and the interference sits at the intervertebral foramen. It gives a palpable fixation, hard and taut muscle fibers, and a sharp break in the temperature differential. A Class B subluxation is meningeal. It gives a pattern reading on a double thermocouple and radiation over the cord and cranium that shifts with posture. It also gives marked heel tension, foot flare, and a musculature Epstein described as rubbery and resistant to pressure. The two readings can genuinely disagree, and Epstein built his sequence on the assumption that they often do.

Alf Breig supplied the mechanics in 1978

The neurosurgeon Alf Breig published Adverse Mechanical Tension in the Central Nervous System in 1978, and Epstein has anchored his teaching to it since 1985. Breig established that the spinal cord is a tensioned structure whose shape is held by the dentate ligaments inside the canal. His decisive finding is that raised tension rather than compression carries the primary neurophysiological consequence, since even compressive lesions generate axial tension. That single result is what makes Epstein's ordering rule mechanical rather than metaphorical. If tension anywhere in the membrane system redistributes through all of it, then a contact at the sacrum can change a reading at the neck. That is the 1979 anomaly Epstein could not explain.

04 / THE COST OF THRUSTING THE COMPENSATION

A thrust on the compensation loads the strategy the body is already using

Epstein named the region where force must not go the point of facilitated focus, most commonly the lumbar and lumbosacral spine. It surfaces, he holds, above a certain magnitude of meningeal involvement. It is where the adverse tension releases. It carries high meningeal tone, and it reduces when the practitioner contacts the point of critical tension elsewhere. His Module B notes state the consequence of getting it wrong in one line. A forceful structural thrust on the point of facilitated focus will increase the tension in the meningeal system.

The question Epstein teaches practitioners to ask before any thrust

Epstein attached a question to the facilitated focus, not a protocol. Before a thrust, examine the meningeal tone and ask whether the region might be a facilitated focus. He predicted that across a course of care the facilitated focus migrates toward the point of critical tension until the two coincide, and that at that moment the subluxation has become mostly structural. The clinical logic follows the same order. Phases one through five in his system are meningeal, and structural work waits for phase six. Epstein also warned that a rapid concussion of force delivered into a meningeal subluxation kicks the legs and arms and extends the neck.

The October 1991 revision made sacrum and occiput the port of entry

Module B carries a dated revision, Phase One Revision as of October 1991, that narrows the entry point to two sites. The sacrum and the occiput are named as vital regions of dural attachment, and a subluxation at either is held to produce adaptive distortions through any portion of the spine. Any other phase subluxation may therefore be a consequence of that primary distortion, so the clinician works from the lowest possible phase upward. Phase one work, he wrote, may correct thoracic and lumbar distortions and any phase two through five finding along with them. Epstein's mnemonic for the phase was ROME, for remember, occiput or sacrum masks everything.

05 / THE WAVE, 1987

Epstein first demonstrated the network wave in public in 1987

His own organization has dated the demonstration twice. The EpiEnergetics release of December 19, 2017 marks that year as the thirtieth anniversary of the first public demonstration, placing it in 1987. The 2016 paper in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine states it plainly: the network wave was first clinically demonstrated in 1987. What Epstein showed was a spine moving on its own after a contact measured in ounces. The practitioner produces no motion. The patient's nervous system does, and the movement travels segment to segment along a spine that nobody is pushing.

What Epstein defined in October 1992

The first print definitions come in volume 1, issue 1 of the Journal of the Association for Network Chiropractic, dated October 1992. Epstein describes two distinct events. The respiratory wave is a nonlinear breathing pattern with large expansions in the trunk musculature, progressing into the shoulder girdle and cervical spine, and he ties it to the flexibility of craniosacral pumping. The somatopsychic wave is an automatic integration of body and mind, associated with vertically aligned undulations of the trunk and movement of the extremities. Once both are integrated, he wrote, a touch of about two to four ounces will usually start one. The paper also fixes the phase count at ten.

Network Spinal Analysis, the second era, begins with a sworn first commercial use of October 6, 1994

Epstein Technologies LLC filed for the mark NETWORK SPINAL ANALYSIS on September 17, 2015 under serial 86760352, and the filing swears that date. It is the cleanest available boundary between the first era and the second. The three eras are separate bodies of work on this site, each with its own page: Network Chiropractic 1.0, Network Spinal Analysis 2.0, and NetworkSpinal 3.0. Material from the later eras is often described as though it were original to 1983, and none of it was.

The peer-reviewed debut came in August 1996

Epstein published Network Spinal Analysis: A System of Health Care Delivery Within the Subluxation-Based Chiropractic Model in August 1996. It ran in volume 1, issue 1 of the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research, at pages 51 to 59. It was one of the first peer-reviewed papers the journal carried, alongside Christopher Kent's review of subluxation models in the same issue. The two waves define the era, and the contacts concentrate at the sacrum and the upper neck where the cord's coverings anchor to bone.

Epstein renamed the adjustment a spinal entrainment

The vocabulary changed with the era. Entrainment in this tradition means the rhythmic vibration of one tone bringing another into synchrony with it, reasoning from a string instrument whose tension sets its tone. The repeated light contacts are the driving rhythm and the vertebral motion segments are the oscillators. Epstein's governing instruction for where the hand goes has stayed constant across both eras, and it is the clearest statement of his root and compensation rule in practical form. The contact goes to the place of ease rather than the place of pain, because a region already braced against load tightens further when it is pushed.

07 / RESEARCH ON NETWORK CARE

The 1997 Blanks survey is the largest study the Network literature produced

The survey reached 2,818 respondents in 156 Network offices across the United States, Canada, Australia and Puerto Rico. Practitioner participation ran at 49 percent, and the response rate at 67 to 71 percent. Robert H. I. Blanks, Tonya L. Schuster and Marnie Dobson published it as A Retrospective Assessment of Network Care Using a Survey of Self-Rated Health, Wellness and Quality of Life. It appeared in the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research in 1997. The paper built and initially validated its own instrument in the same study.

What the survey collected

Respondents rated four domains: physical state, mental and emotional state, stress evaluation, and life enjoyment. They also rated overall quality of life. Each domain was rated twice, once for the present and once retrospectively for the period before care. Respondents were grouped by duration of care, from one to three months out to more than three years. Schuster, Dobson, Jauregui and Blanks returned to the same 156 offices for Wellness Lifestyles II in 2004. That paper modeled 2,596 patients with structural equation modeling at a response rate near 69 percent.

The instrumentation line is small, and its flagship recorded two subjects

Jonckheere and colleagues published the flagship recording in Biomedical Signal Processing and Control in 2010, volume 5, issue 4, pages 336 to 347. Two subjects were recorded, one control woman in her early thirties and one man in his thirties with a C5 cord injury from a swimming pool dive. Four ungelled tripolar surface electrode patches sat at C2 to C3, T4 to T6, L3, and S2 to S4. Inside each burst the researchers found a fundamental oscillation near 13.5 Hz and a coherence of about 0.3 across roughly one meter of spine.

Epstein closed the Network Spinal Analysis era on December 19, 2017

A release from the EpiEnergetics Foundation announces the further evolution of Network Spinal Analysis, Network 2.0, to Network Spinal, Network 3.0. Twenty-three years separate the sworn first commercial use of the second name from that announcement. The mark NETWORKSPINAL records a first use of December 21, 2017, two days later. Epstein teaches the third era from Boulder, Colorado, through the EpiEnergetics Institute, and his organization was publishing the single word name on its site by July 2019. The trade body renamed itself separately between August and October 2000, so the association timeline and the trademark timeline are two different histories.

Spinal gateways and five phases of cord tension

The third era is organized around the spinal gateway. Epstein and his coauthors defined it in 2016 as a region of probability within the intersegmental connective tissues, located where the spinal cord attaches and modulating between stress, tension and available energy. A gateway is developed across a course of care rather than found once, and the 2016 paper puts that development at several weeks to several months for an individual person. Epstein has taught Network to other chiropractors since the 1980s, and the profession's straight wing honored him for it

The dated seminar artifacts run from the middle of the 1980s. One Common Flow, issued in 1989, states the objective in Epstein's own terms. Network exists to free people from the internal interference of vertebral subluxations, so that they can perceive, adapt to and recover from stress. The Eighteen Principles of Network Chiropractic appeared the same year in Module A of the Network Chiropractic Seminar, volume 2 issue 1. Module B carries the Phase One Revision of October 1991. Epstein gave the spinal meningeal functional unit its formal definition in a paper presented in November 1989. It names the brain and spinal cord with the nerves and meninges, together with the vertebral column, pelvis and cranium.

Sherman College and the 2012 Service to the Profession Award

The citation, dated June 19, 2012, credits Epstein's contributions of time and commitment to the profession, the public and the college. He has served on the college's Board of Regents and on its postgraduate faculty. Sherman is the institutional home of the straight tradition. The same citation records that Epstein testified before the United States White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Policy, a body that ran from 2000 to 2002.

The books, and Somato Respiratory Integration

Epstein published The 12 Stages of Healing with Nathaniel Altman in 1994 through Amber-Allen Publishing, and it has been translated into five languages. Healing Myths, Healing Magic followed from the same publisher in 2000, sorting the stories people hold about how bodies heal into social, biomedical, religious and New Age categories. Alongside the hands-on work he built Somato Respiratory Integration, a set of breath, focused attention and gentle touch exercises a person performs between visits. Reorganizational Healing, published with Simon Senzon and Daniel Lemberger in May 2009, is the framework he teaches the clinical method inside.

The Unified Model of Tone treats Epstein's root and compensation split as governing

Not every finding is a root. Some findings are the body's own strategy for coping with a root somewhere else, and force applied to the strategy makes the situation worse. Epstein reached that position from the clinic, and he reached it in print in 1983. The model states the same rule in its own vocabulary and extends it.

Root versus compensation, stated first and stated best

The model separates the leverage point from the compensation. A leverage point is a focal, high-influence location, typically near a major connective tissue anchor, where a small well-matched input can start system-wide change. A compensation is the downstream region where tension has already accumulated to the limit of what the tissue can dissipate. Force applied there deepens defense, because to tissue already at its limit any added input reads as further demand rather than as an organizing signal. Epstein's Class B subluxation and his point of facilitated focus are that same pair, named forty years earlier and worked out at the table.

Pooling nine techniques into one analysis set the pattern this practice follows

Epstein's founding act was refusing to choose one doorway. He visited practitioners who relied only on the Toftness lens, only on motion palpation, only on spinographs, only on leg checks, and concluded that each was correct for the model of subluxation he had accepted. That conclusion is the same position the model holds when it says there is rarely a single lynchpin. A body carries several points of critical tension at once, each with a different potential to reorganize the whole, and that potential shifts from week to week. Tonal Chiropractic is built the same way, from many techniques read as one variable.

Epstein already used the word tone, and used it the way the model does

The 1986 paper closes on tone as the measurable quantity. Epstein wrote that the tension and tone of the spinal meningeal functional unit are in actuality the means of assessing the perception of and response to environmental stress. He defined tone in 1989 as a composite of resilience, texture and tension of body tissues, and he wrote of establishing the tone of the cord itself through the tension of its dural attachments. The Unified Model of Tone completes the arc. Tone is the integrated organization through which the body's many processes relate to one another, and oscillation is the medium it is written in.

What the Unified Model of Tone predicts from here

Two predictions follow, and they belong to the model rather than to Epstein. First, the model predicts that his two readings will prove to be one. Measures of membrane and cord mechanics and measures of paraspinal tone should covary as functions of a single regulatory state. A change induced at one site should appear at the other within the same session. Second, the model predicts that the point of critical tension behaves as a state variable rather than as an address. Its location should track autonomic state and shift between sessions in the same person. Coupling is the term the model uses for what entrainment produces.

Where Donald Epstein sits among the legends

Epstein is the point where several older lines in this hall converge and come out as one procedure. Bertrand DeJarnette gave him the sacrum and the occiput as two ends of one membrane, and Epstein credits him by name for the dural tension argument. Richard Van Rumpt gave him the reactive leg and the prior claim that direction outranks magnitude. Arno Burnier reached the same low end of the force range by another route, delivering the adjustment into ease rather than into defense.

Bio-Geometric Integration shares Network's premises without descending from it

Sue Brown practiced Network Chiropractic alongside Epstein and then left to build Bio-Geometric Integration, which she first taught in 2000. BGI stands on its own terms and is not a branch of Network. The two share the breath, the light contact and the patient's active role, and those are held in common. Torque Release Technique is the other method in this library that took adverse mechanical cord tension as its clinical variable, and it delivers its input through an instrument instead of a fingertip.
